What is protein?

Did you know that proteins are the building blocks of life? Proteins are big molecules that make all the tissue in your body. What exactly does it mean when we say “tissue”? It is all the types of material that your body and the bodies of plants, animals, are made of.

What is a protein made of?

Proteins are made of lots of amino acids. Amino acids are molecules that are made from smaller molecules, such as hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon and oxygen. The amino acids are all bound into a long chain to form a protein. There are 20 amino acids and with them lots of different proteins can be built in the body. When you eat any sources of protein, your body breaks down all these big protein molecules into amino acids. This process, where your body breaks down the protein molecules, is called catabolism. Catabolism is the “breaking down” part of protein metabolism (the chemical and physical processes that are responsible for building protein and for breaking it down). Your body then uses these amino acids to make special proteins that your body need. This “building up” process where proteins are made from amino acids is called protein anabolism and it is the “building up” metabolism of proteins.

What happens when you do not eat enough protein?

When you do not eat enough high protein foods such as fish, meat, nuts, mushrooms, and dairy products, you become protein deficient! This is a very dangerous condition and you can get very sick if you do not eat enough protein. Your body will start taking protein from your own body, when you do not eat enough protein foods. This will cause your muscles to get very small and you will feel very weak. Your hair can start to fall out and your skin will become very dry! We don’t want all these bad things to happen to us, so make sure that you eat your yummy, protein rich foods!

What happens when you eat too much protein?

When you eat too much protein your tummy can start to hurt! You can start to gain weight and make your kidneys work too hard. Be careful not eat too much protein and make sure you eat just the right amount for your body.

How much protein is enough?

You don’t want to eat too much protein, but you also don’t want to eat too little protein. So, how much protein is enough for you? All that you have to do to find out how much protein your body needs is to find out how much you weigh! You have to eat about 0.5 grams of protein for every two pounds you weight. You can ask someone to help you to do the math, so that you know exactly how much protein you need.+

Different types of protein:

You get proteins that we call complete protein and incomplete protein. When a protein is called a complete protein, it means that the protein is made up from all the essential amino acids that your body need. Essential amino acids are amino acids that your body cannot make on its own, and your body needs it. Foods that contain complete proteins are food that has animal protein, such as fish or meat in it. Incomplete protein is normally found in plant based foods that have protein in them. These protein molecules do not have all the essential amino acids in them. For example, you cannot get all the essential amino acids from beans. You can get all the essential amino acids from a mixture of different types of food sources with incomplete protein. For example, you can eat beans and mushrooms to get all the essential amino acids.

Protein function and the benefits of protein:

Protein is very important to your body, because it helps to fix your body tissue and it also helps with the development. Even your hair, eyes and heart are all made from protein. This is why it is so important for you to eat enough protein. Your body needs to make protein tissue all the time.

The extra protein that your body does not use to repair and grow new protein tissue with is used to make energy in your body. Your body needs hormones and protein helps to make these. Hormones are chemicals in your body such as insulin that controls the amount of sugar in your blood.
Enzymes are proteins and help with a lot of chemical processes in your body. For example, when you eat meat, there is an enzyme called protease that helps to break down the big protein molecules in the meat, so that your body can use it.

Protein helps to transport certain molecules in your body. A great example is haemoglobin (a protein molecule in red blood cells), that carries oxygen around in the body. Proteins also form antibodies that are like the police officers in your body. These antibodies help to destroy harmful stuff such as bacteria that get into your body. The police officer cells search for the intruding particles and then surround them, while they wait for white blood cells to destroy the intruding cells.

Now you know what a protein is and you can see all the benefits of protein consumption. Why don’t you tell me what your favourite source of high protein food is?
